Dane Mills Bosley
Chris’ fourth book entitled ‘Dane Mills Bosley’, is an industrial and social history of Dane Mills Bosley, where he served his engineering apprenticeship, between 1959 & 1966.
The two mills, located in the small Cheshire village of Bosley, date back to the mid-eighteenth century, when they were constructed by the famous industrialist, Charles Roe and his partners.
Chris has very fond memories of his employment at Dane Mills, and wished to capture the culture of the place, by detailing some stories about a number of his fellow workers.
There is an overview of the history of the mills leading to his time there, and an account of the plant and machinery in operation in the 1960s. Many of the capital equipment manufacturers of that period are no longer in business, or they have relocated their manufacturing facilities off-shore. Chris wanted to record their details, as part of our industrial heritage.
He managed to list the names of the majority of mill workers during his time, as well as the occupants of the mill cottages, located close to each of the two mills.
The book is aimed at those who appreciate reading social history as well as enthusiasts of engineering and manufacturing processes of a by gone era. The book was first published in 2012.
Tragically, on the 17th July 2015 disaster was to strike the Higher Works Mill and following a number of explosions and a major fire, the four storey building was virtually destroyed. Sadly, four employees lost their lives in the disaster and others suffered serious injury, and some lost their village homes. Chris could never have foreseen such a tragedy would happen at the time he was writing the book, but he’s so pleased that he was able to record the period when he worked there, which he hopes will be of interest to future generations.
